What is ECTN?
ECTN (Electronic Cargo Tracking Note) is a mandatory shipping document for cargo entering many African countries. Learn how it works.
The Electronic Cargo Tracking Note (ECTN) is a paperless document that tracks cargo through the supply chain. It is mandatory for maritime shipments to over 31 African and Middle Eastern countries.
What ECTN does: It links to your Bill of Lading, provides a unique serial number, and is digitally signed. Customs authorities use it to verify cargo details before arrival, reducing fraud and improving port efficiency.
Key benefits: Increased transparency, faster customs clearance, reduced document fraud, and accurate trade statistics. The World Bank reported significant fraud reduction in West Africa after ECTN adoption.
How to apply: Submit Commercial Invoice, Bill of Lading, Freight Invoice, and Packing List to GetCTN. Most certificates are validated within 24-48 hours. Apply before vessel departure – many countries require validation 72 hours before loading.
