What is a CTN Certificate?
A CTN (Cargo Tracking Note) is a mandatory shipping document required by 31 African countries for all commercial goods imported by sea. Also known as ECTN (Electronic Cargo Tracking Note), BSC (Bordereau de Suivi de Cargaison), or BESC (Bordereau Électronique de Suivi des Cargaisons) depending on the destination country, this certificate enables port authorities to track and monitor imported cargo.
Without a valid CTN certificate, cargo cannot clear customs at the destination port — resulting in fines of $2,000–$5,000+ per container, storage charges, and possible seizure. The certificate must be obtained before the vessel arrives at the destination port.
