Difference Between the Waiver and the Cargo Tracking Note

11 November 2020

Waiver vs CTN: when do you need a waiver certificate instead of a full cargo tracking note?

Some shipments may qualify for a waiver instead of a full CTN/ECTN. Understanding the difference helps avoid unnecessary costs or compliance issues.

Cargo Tracking Note (CTN/ECTN): The standard mandatory document for most commercial shipments. Required for customs clearance at destination.

Waiver certificate: A document that exempts certain cargo from the full CTN requirement. Typically for humanitarian aid, diplomatic shipments, personal effects, or other exempt categories.

How to know: Requirements vary by country. Not all countries offer waivers. Contact GetCTN with your shipment details – we will confirm whether you need a full CTN or if a waiver applies.
