New Requirement for Shipping to Burkina Faso

14 April 2023

Burkina Faso now requires URN number and ECTN for all imports. Updated documentation requirements for shippers.

Burkina Faso has implemented new cargo tracking requirements for all imports. Shippers must obtain a URN (Unique Reference Number) and ECTN certificate before vessel departure.

What you need: Commercial Invoice, Bill of Lading (draft acceptable), Freight Invoice, Packing List, and URN number. The ECTN must be validated before the vessel arrives at the transit or destination port.

Transit shipments: Burkina Faso is landlocked. Cargo typically transits through Tema (Ghana), Abidjan (Ivory Coast), or Lomé (Togo). Ensure your ECTN covers the full route.

Timing: Apply early. Late applications can result in delays, fines, or cargo detention. GetCTN processes Burkina Faso ECTN/URN certificates within 24-48 hours.
